Customs Clearance FAQ
Common questions about customs brokerage
What documents do I need for customs clearance?
Essential documents include: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, and Bill of Lading/Air Waybill. Depending on the product and destination, additional documents may be required: Certificate of Origin, Insurance Certificate, Import License, product certifications (FCC, CE, FDA), or Power of Attorney authorizing your customs broker. We'll guide you through all required documentation based on your specific shipment.
How long does customs clearance take?
Typical customs clearance takes 1-3 days, depending on the country and cargo type. Simple shipments with complete documentation often clear within 24 hours. Complex shipments requiring inspections, additional documentation, or agency approvals (FDA, USDA, DOT) may take 3-7 days or longer. Pre-clearance preparation and accurate documentation significantly reduce clearance time.
What's the difference between DDP and DDU?
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means the seller/importer pays all import duties and taxes upfront, and the receiver pays nothing upon arrival. DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) means the receiver is responsible for paying import duties and taxes when the goods arrive. With DiamondUp DDP service, we handle all duty payments and provide an all-inclusive price with no surprise charges for the receiver.
Do I need a customs broker or can I clear customs myself?
While some countries allow self-clearance, using a professional customs broker is strongly recommended for several reasons: complex regulations vary by country and product, mistakes can be costly (penalties, delays, cargo seizure), brokers have direct access to customs systems, and can navigate issues that arise during clearance. Professional brokers save time, reduce risk, and often save money through proper classification and duty optimization.
How are import duties calculated?
Import duties are calculated based on: 1) HS Code (Harmonized System) classification of the product, 2) Country of origin where goods were manufactured, 3) Declared value of goods (CIF price including freight and insurance), and 4) Duty rate for that classification and origin. Formula: Duty = CIF Value × Duty Rate. Additional taxes like VAT or GST are calculated separately based on destination country regulations.
What happens if my shipment is selected for inspection?
Customs may select shipments for random inspection or based on risk assessment. If selected, customs will examine the cargo to verify documentation matches contents. Inspections can include: X-ray scanning, physical examination, document verification, or lab testing. We handle all inspection coordination, provide any additional documentation needed, and keep you informed throughout the process. Most inspections are completed within 1-3 days.
